Cloud sculptures, fields of light and crochet lions: 59 artists take the lead in race for twelve London 2012 commissions
More than 2,000 artists across the United Kingdom have taken up the challenge to use the nation as a blank canvas to create a piece of art that will showcase our creativity to the world, as part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.
It’s three weeks since we launched Artists taking the lead, and we’re delighted that 90 artists have so far submitted their ideas for the commissions, which range from the weird to the wonderful.
Mae artistiaid o bob math o bob cwr o’r DU yn cael eu herio i ddefnyddio’r genedl fel cynfas gwag ar gyfer deuddeg darn o waith comisiwn ysbrydoledig a fydd yn dangos ein creadigrwydd i’r byd, fel rhan o Olympiad Diwylliannol Llundain 2012.
Akram Khan: ‘Mae’n hanfodol ein bod ni, fel cenedl, yn gwerthfawrogi mynegiant trwy’r celfyddydau a’r ffordd mae’n rhoi ein bywydau mewn cyd-destun ac yn ein galluogi i nodi unrhyw foment mewn hanes – fel y Gemau Olympaidd – gan ddathlu cyrhaeddiad a chyfle a chysylltiadau darparu ar gyfer cenedlaethau’r dyfodol.
Akram Khan: ‘It’s vital, we as a nation, value expression through the arts, the way it puts our lives into context and enables us to mark moments in history - such as the Olympics - celebrate achievement and opportunity and provide touch points for future generations.
Artists of all kinds from across the UK are being challenged to use the nation as a blank canvas for twelve inspirational commissions that will showcase our creativity to the world, as part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.
