Shouting Olympiad in a virtual stadium

21 September 2009

I'm Stephen Newbould, Artistic Director of BCMG, who will be working with composer David Lang to produce The Shouting Olympiad. Over the past few weeks we've been working our initial idea up into a viable project. The original plan (in the box on this project homepage) implied a huge amount of international travel and, concerned about carbon footprint as well as cost and practical viability, David and BCMG have been re-imagining the project in a way which is true to its spirit and celebrates the amazing diversity of the region's population. We are also taking it indoors! We will embrace digital technologies, sound and video design - and an old warehouse - to create a 24-hour installation for The Shouting Olympiad project.  So audiences will enter a virtual 'surround-sound' stadium to encounter our performers, each representing a country taking part in London 2012. That's over 200 countries and we want as many as possible of the participants - if not all - to be drawn from the West Midlands region. That's the exciting challenge we are setting ourselves!

Lots of people from many countries and backgrounds joining together to achieve an outstanding musical SHOUT, or two, or threeor more. Go for it!!

That is a really wacky, original idea - would love to see it "live" once it's ready!!! Wonder if there's any way I'll be able to do that without going to the stadium as I don't live in the Midlands? Could I be a part of a virtual audience?

Thanks for your encouragement Richard and Carole. And yes, if you can't be there in person we plan an online version of The Shouting Olympiad, so you can enter the building virtually and see and hear the work, almost as good as being there!

It's great to have such a respected composer working in the region.
